Prohibition

effects of prohibition

  • Conversely, by the end of the 1920s there were more alcoholics and illegal drinking establishments than before Prohibition
  • How many of you were not allowed to drink when living with your parents? If they were home you followed their rules. You only drank if your parents didn’t know,  Or if they weren’t home. Now you’re in college and since you’re still technically underage you’re risking a lot just by having a few beers. That’s what makes it appealing though. It’s breaking the rules. This is kind of like how prohibition was. Prohibition was pointless because all it led to was more people breaking the rules, and the government lost money because of it. The black market on the other hand was making a profit. It also led to more people becoming alcoholics and overdoing it. Obviously prohibition didn’t work out, so why is there basically still a ban on alcohol on people under 21. In other countries that ban doesn’t exist, so why is it mandatory here. I think that if the ban wasn’t in place, more teens would have their chances to experiment with alcohol before college and it wouldn’t seem so cool because no rules are being broken. Then for the most part excessive drinking would be reduced in the college age category. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t exist but I think it would help. What do you think?

    1. Some limit should exist to alcohol comsumption if only because of the damage alcohol can do to the body. If the limit were lower to match other legal limits it would make more sense such as if the drinking age was lower to eighteen. This is the legal limit for voting and joining the military. If you can go to war and die for your country, you should be able to share a drink with some buddies beforehand. If you are old enough to make decisions that direct the future of this nation, you should be old enough to make descicions that will effect your own immediate future.

    2. I too agree that the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen. If at the age of eighteen we are considered adults then why are adults not allowed to make there own decisions. It doesn’t make sense to keep a law that is routinely broken. More college students drink excessively when they go to college because they want to try something that they were not exposed to when they were younger, so it is pointless to keep the legal age at 21.
