prohibition

Now for the other side of prohibition. Alcohol is not good for the human body in excessive amounts. Although it is not considered an addictive drug, it is addicting to some people and can be harmful. It can also be very dangerous, make people mean, or lazy. In this cartoon prohibition picture, which is obviously for prohibition, the alcohol barrels and bottles are carrying signs of all the bad thing things they do. The waste grain, they fill the asylums, they make people poor, they cause crime. And this is all true, which is why prohibition passed for awhile. Even now days though, alcohol still makes people poor, especially alcoholics. In an economy like today, why are people wasting their money on alcohol, especially when they drink in excess and don’t even remember what happened. Why waste money to not remember the night?  Anyway, the other side of prohibition, alcohol is a waste of everything so why not just get rid of it?

  1. The reason prohibition failed was that is was an intrusion on on a personal freedom. The prohibition act was actually partly responsible for forming many of the organized crimes syndicates in the U.S.. People use alcohol as an escape drug. You said it yourself that if they drink enough that they wouldn’t remember it and that is precisely the reason for their drinking. Especially in times like these, people drink to escape from reality even if just for a little while. While it may be impractical because that money could be spent on something more useful in the future, alcoholics tend to live in the moment of their additction. If it makes them feel good now, why wait until later?

  2. I do agree that alcohol is harmful to society. The grain used to create alcohol could be used to feed a homeless person instead of ailing our country. Though getting rid of alcohol would not be feasible, as many people would lose their jobs. Also there is the possibility of increasing illegal activities as alcohol would be treated as a drug.

  3. I agree getting rid of actually might actually just do as much damage because there would be millions of jobs lost. People just need to learn how to control themselves….which obviously is not very likely so it’s just gonna be a neverending cycle.
